What Is Gum Disease? 

Healthy teeth are only possible with healthy gums and bone structures at the periphery. The diseases in this area are called periodontal diseases.

Periodontal diseases are classified in two main groups according to their stages.

Gingivitis: This is a superficial infection limited with gum tissue and which does not effect the bone layer below. Gums may look normal, but may also show some symptoms:

  • Red and swollen gums

  • Bleeding gums when brushing the teeth

  • Foul mouth odor

Periodontitis: When infection spreads to the bone layer underneath the gum it is called periodontitis. Degradation occurs on the bone structure supporting the tooth at this stage. If periodontitis is not treated tooth may be lost. The symptoms of periodontitis are as below:

  • New spaces developing between the teeth.

  • If several teeth are lost it indicates severe bone degradation.

  • Gums that pull away from your teeth (gingival recession) and exposing surface of the root of the teeth, maket he teeth longer than they are. Receding gums should be taken seriously no matter what stage it is at.

  • Gums that feel tender when touched, urge to rub the gums and feeling of discomfort.

A conscious dental care, regular dental controls and cleaning tartars will ensure prevention of dental problems. Controls usually take place every 6 months and every 3 months in serious discolorations or gum problems. X-rays and gum pocket measurements are very important in severe gum diseases in terms of following the course of the disease.

Diagnosis

Your gums can also be checked easily during a routine examination at the dental clinic. Diagnosis will be given with the help of X-rays, gum pocket measurements and clinical examination.

The treatment of gum diseases are maintained through;

  • individual oral hygiene,

  • regular cleaning of plaques and tartar,

  • dental occlusion evaluation by the dentist,

  • renewal of restorations that complicate providing hygiene

  • treatment of gum pockets and repair of tissue loss with biomaterials

  • regular clinical measurements and controls
